DOES THE HYBRID SYSTEM SAVE ENERGY?

Overall the hybrid system does not save energy, which differs from hybrid automobiles. Little or no energy can be gained from dynamic braking. The advantage is rather based on the fact that batteries can be recharged out on the water and the newly obtained energy can immediately be used for the equal-zero-emission and silent electric engine.

IS SPECIAL SERVICE OR MAINTENANCE NEEDED?

• No: The service and maintenance can be provided by any STEYR MOTORS dealer. Basically it works just like with any other diesel engine; however, the STEYR MOTORS solution only needs very little maintenance. In other words, problems can easily be fixed by any boat engine shop/repair. • Maintenance is equal to other engines. The only difference is that the batteries should always be fully functional.

HOW DOES THE FUNCTIONALITY WORK IN DETAIL?

The STEYR HYBRID PROPULSION for pleasure boats offers the following operational modes: 1. the Electric Drive mode to infinitely run the boat slowly without making any engine noise, no unpleasant odor or cold start smoke 2. For smooth, but powerful starting with the support of the permanent magnet start-generator 3. The boost mode to support the acceleration of the combustion engine with the substantial torque of the electric engine 4. Charging – whenever using the combustion engine the batteries are quickly recharged at up to a 90A charging rate.

HOW FAST AND HOW FAR CAN THE ELECTRIC ENGINE DRIVE? HOW FAST IS THE DIESEL ENGINE?

• Electric – approx. 5 knots (= approx 9 km/h) for approx. 1hour• Depending on the actual model, the diesel engine reaches 30-38knots.

HOW FAST CAN THE BATTERIES BE RECHARGED BY THE DIESEL ENGINE?

• it takes about an hour for the batteries to recharge while driving with a diesel engine• using a regular charging device it does take approx. 12 hours

WILL THE STEYR MOTORS HYBRID OFFER ADDITIONAL SAFETY?

Yes, STEYR MOTOR’s engine solution allows you to run both systems independently. Even when the supply batteries are fully discharged you can start the combustion engine with a separate 12V starter battery. The full capacity of the highly efficient diesel engine is immediately available.
